Minnesota refunds contributions made by individuals eligible to vote in Minnesota, to a recognized political party or to a qualified candidate for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state auditor, state senator, or state representative, up to a maximum of $50 per calendar year for an individual or $100 per calendar year for a married couple filing jointly. Beginning with contributions made in 2024, the maximum refund amounts increase to $75 per calendar year for an individual or $150 per calendar year for a married couple filing jointly.
To receive a refund, the contributor must obtain a political contribution refund receipt from the qualified candidate or party unit and submit it to the Department of Revenue along with a political contribution refund application form. The refund application form is available by using the quick links in the box at the right.
A candidate is qualified to issue a political contribution refund receipt if the candidate has signed and filed an agreement to limit spending during the election cycle, prior to the contribution being received. Judicial candidates and candidates for local and federal offices are not eligible to participate in the political contribution refund program.
